Yikes! Where did that month go? There was a pressing deadline that was met, a couple of
family birthdays enjoyed, a half-term holiday and a 24hour virus that took advantage of
my enfeebled immune system and beat up on me for over a week. Am only now emerging from
the snot, head fug and forgotten tissues that accidentally went through the wash giving
us all paper dandruff.

Great excitement this morning for an enthusiastic 'Robin-stroker' like
myself. What we first thought was a scabby-looking woodpigeon on the back lawn
turned out to be a male juvenile Sparrowhawk sitting on its prey. Our first
visit from a bird of prey! They're supposed to be quite common but we've never
seen one before. The most exotic visitor previous to this was a Greater Spotted
Woodpecker. That's what passes for excitement in this neck of the woods ;)

BICS was a lot of fun, as always. Thanks to Shane, James and all the people who help run the show for putting on an enjoyable event. I shared a table with Will 'n' Liz, the comic making double act behind
Butternut Comics (www.butternutcomics.com) and had loads of fun chatting away with them all weekend.

In other news...did anyone see the new adaptation of Emma on the BBC last night?
What a disaster! I was grinding my teeth almost from the off, it's bad in soooo
many ways, not least in getting the casting of Knightley wrong, Mr. Woodhouse wrong
and Miss Bates wrong. Honestly, if you get Knightley wrong then you're sunk, but also,
small yet key roles like Mr. Woodhouse are vital to making the plot work. Michael Gambon
is usually fantastically entertaining but is miscast here. I could go on about the stuff
cut out (no surprise, it's an adaptation) but invented, redundant and badly written scenes
put in their place? Argghhhhh.
Looking for a fine adaptation of Emma? Penguin's audio book narrated by Fiona Shaw is
wonderful.
